Part 1: Why Nonprofit Boards Need a Give-Get Policy From Day One

As a nonprofit consultant, I’ve often seen organizations struggle with fundraising because their boards don’t fully understand the crucial role they play. One of the most effective ways to engage board members from the start and ensure they contribute meaningfully to your nonprofit’s financial health is by implementing a Give-Get policy.

In this blog, we’ll explore what a Give-Get policy is and why it’s a must-have for your board from day one.

What is a "Give-Get" Policy?

A Give-Get policy sets clear expectations for board members to either:

  1. Give a personally meaningful financial contribution to the nonprofit, or

  2. Get others to donate by leveraging their personal and professional networks.

In essence, it’s a fundraising commitment. Every board member is expected to either donate or help raise a specific amount each year.

Why Your Nonprofit Needs a Give-Get Policy

1. Accountability from the Start

Board members are passionate about the mission, but without clear fundraising responsibilities, they can become disengaged when it comes to the financial side. A Give-Get policy provides clear expectations and ensures board members aren’t just passive volunteers, but active participants in ensuring the organization’s financial health.

2. Building a Culture of Philanthropy

When a board is fully invested in fundraising, they foster a culture of philanthropy. This mindset shift leads board members to view fundraising as a necessary part of mission advancement, not just an obligation. That culture often spreads throughout the organization, driving others to become more involved in financial growth and sustainability.

3. Setting the Right Tone for New Board Members

When a Give-Get policy is in place from the start, new board members know exactly what's expected of them. This eliminates surprises later and helps recruit members who are ready to give or get. Those who aren’t comfortable with that commitment will self-select out, leaving you with a stronger, more engaged board.

Stay tuned for part two, where we’ll dive into how Give-Get policies boost fundraising results and offer tips for successfully implementing them!
